9th International Heritage Rose
Conference Proceedings 122 pages. Emphasis is noisettes and their origins. From pages 6-7: "At the heart of this symposium is our desire to see this conference showcase this special relationship between Charleston and old roses. The efforts of volunteers in Charleston now to plant these old Noisettes and their famous offspring, the Tea Noisettes, shows the depth of feeling Charlestonians have for this story." Noisette Roses The Charleston Horticultural Society is pleased to announce the release of Noisette Roses - 19th Century Charleston’s Gift to the World, their first publication and what is believed to be the first publication on Noisette Roses in America. The Noisette Rose was named after Philippe Noisette who was the first Director of the Charleston Botanical Society in 1808. It was developed by John Champneys on his plantation south of Charleston, near Ravenel, South Carolina. Edited by Virginia Kean, a writer, editor and producer based in Redwood City, California, this full color, first edition softback publication is 86 pages in length and printed on acid free paper. The Charleston Horticultural Society is deeply grateful to the Heritage Rose Foundation for a grant to underwrite a portion of the printing. |

This reprint produced by Sweetbriar press combines the two volumes from 1850 and 1853. The reproduction of the original chromlithographic plates is exceptionally faithful. Curtis’ inimitable paintings, executed directly on the lithographic plates have a charm and brilliancy that many have compared favorably with Redouté’s work—less accurate in their textural portrayal of foliage, but precise in the number, shape and spacing of thorns, and superb in their representation of the flowers. 82 pages with 38 color prints. Review of Beauties of the Rose by Jean Lewis, from Rosa Mundi, spring/summer 2007. |
